What's the difference between absolute and nominal filter rating?
An absolute rating (e.g. Fil-Trek's Beta 5000 High Flow line) guarantees removal efficiency at that micron size with a tested performance standard. A nominal rating is a general approximation without the same guaranteed removal efficiency — the distinction matters directly for RO pretreatment sizing, where an under-rated filter lets particulate through to foul downstream membranes.
What causes premature cartridge filter blinding?
Blinding — a rapid rise in pressure drop from surface clogging — is typically a mismatch between filter media type (spun vs. pleated) and the actual particulate load and size distribution in the fluid. An undersized housing or wrong media construction for peak flow forces more frequent change-outs than a correctly sized system would need.
Why does housing sizing matter beyond just pressure rating?
Cartridge filter housings are available in ASME Section VIII Division 1 code-stamped or economic non-code construction, with NSF/ANSI 61 potable-water certification available on specific models. The right housing spec depends on the application's flow rate at peak (not average) demand and its regulatory requirement, not just operating pressure alone.
What's the difference between DOE and SOE cartridge configurations?
DOE (double open-ended) and SOE (single open-ended) describe how the cartridge seals in the housing — the wrong configuration for a given housing allows bypass, where unfiltered water flows around the cartridge rather than through it, defeating the filtration entirely even though the cartridge itself is correctly rated.
